Four people were killed after a landslide struck Zone 1, Barangay Sambulawan, Barangay Agusan here during the onslaught of Tropical Storm Basyang, authorities confirmed.
The landslide occurred at around 10:30 p.m. following hours of continuous heavy rainfall.
A house owned by a married couple—Paul Lariosa, 47, and his wife Ruffah, 35—was buried by soil and debris, resulting in their immediate deaths.
Also declared dead were two of their relatives: a 12-year-old child and an 11-month-old toddler, as confirmed by City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD) Manager Nick Joaquin Jabagat.
In an interview with Juander Radyo, Jabagat said this was the first time the area had experienced a landslide.
“First time kani siya,” Jabagat said.
He added that barangay officials had repeatedly warned residents about Tropical Storm Basyang, noting that reminders or “rekoreda” had been conducted over the past three days.
Meanwhile, aside from the deadly landslide, flooding was reported in several parts of Cagayan de Oro, including national highways in Barangays Bugo, Cugman, and Tablon, causing traffic disruptions and temporary road closures.
The CDRRMD remains on heightened alert, conducting continuous monitoring, assessing vulnerable areas, and coordinating closely with barangay officials. Residents living near slopes and in flood-prone communities have been advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation advisories as weather conditions remain unstable.
As of press time, authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage.
