Cagayan de Oro will soon have free wireless fidelity (Wifi) access. The 18th City Council headed by Vice Mayor Joaquin V. Uy, during its 21st regular session approved an ordinance authorizing Mayor Oscar Moreno, in behalf of the city government, to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), represented by Secretary Rodolfo Salalima. The agreement covers the implementation of the Free Wifi Access in Public Places Project, under the terms and conditions stated therein. Under the agreement, the national government through the DICT is undertaking the Free Wifi Project across the country to accelerate economic, social and educational opportunities and reduce the digital divide under the e-Filipino Program of the government. Such project shall provide free wifi internet access in public places nationwide and shall cover selected cities and municipalities, and public places such as public schools, libraries, hospitals, rural health units, police stations, state universities and colleges, public transport terminals, seaports and airports. The ordinance was reviewed by the committees on public utilities and on laws and rules, respectively chaired by Councilors Teodulfo Lao and Ian Mark Nacaya. (sp)
