Uy right to act on garbage woes, must now fix traffic mess

I am writing you to express my thoughts about recent developments in the City which certainly has also caught your discriminating attention.

Mayor Uy did one of his best moves when he sacked Mr. Cuenca from CLENRO whose failure to perform one of the basic mandates of his office, to make the City free of the stench and foul smell of garbage, made the mayor the recipient of negative criticisms and ridicule. I can sense that the City is now keeping a close watch of the performance of Ms. Mabelin who was designated to take the helm at CLENRO.

I can sense that it was a difficult decision on the mayor's part considering that Mr. Cuenca has undoubtedly contributed to the success of the Uy administration even as he oftentimes served as a virtual spokesperson of the city's contracted garbage collector. We can only wonder why he failed to exact the right performance from the garbage contractor. With the Mayor now personally at the helm of the garbage clean up function, the City can hopefully expect that the stench and foul smell will very soon be gone for good.

Aside from the garbage problem, the worsening traffic situation in the City needs the mayor's focused attention.

I cannot imagine why the RTA is still in its old self despite the utter failure of its current occupants - the department manager and the consultants who appear to be doing nothing else but conduct meetings as they have been bragging about in social media. Meetings that have not even resulted in any improvement in the traffic condition of the city.

Mayor Uy needs to take a closer look at how the RTA is being managed. This is an unsolicited advice to prevent the traffic problem from becoming another "garbage phenomenon" which will necessitate him to personally be at the helm - again.

Do not get me wrong. I want the mayor to succeed as the city's chief executive. He has been doing good in several governance aspects, but the way some of his lieutenants are managing their mandates leaves much to be desired. In short, they are dragging him down with them.

Noticeably, operations conducted by the RTA which they brag about in social media lack consistency from whichever angle we view them. If there is an office in the City that needs serious help, it's the RTA. And what have its consultants done? They seem to be good only in conducting meetings with no tangible results on the road.

Maybe your investigative journalism instincts and training can be activated to look into the problems of the RTA more closely to help the mayor address the traffic problem of the city.
