A TEN-wheeled open bed cargo truck broke down at the corner of the approach to Maharlika Bridge late at night on February 20. The truck was trying to make a right-hand turn to enter the Marcos bridge when its rear left tire gave way.
By the early morning of February 21, Monday traffic gridlock was building up.
According to the mechanic working on the disabled truck, all the drum bolts holding the left outer tire were snapped off, resulting in the tire breaking free and causing the heavily-loaded truck bed to collapse onto the remaining inner tire and immobilizing the vehicle.
He added that it may take a few hours to get the truck back up and running.
The obstruction caused long lines of stuck vehicles from all four approaches of the CM Recto- RN Pelaez intersection, with the western approach reaching almost two kilometers back.
The Road and Traffic Administration enforcers were on site to ensure the slow albeit flowing movement of traffic.
