AT first glance, few would think of the Duterte family as the “First Family.” Rodrigo Roa Duterte, often called Digong, Rody, or by his initials DU30 and PRRD, was the 16th president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022.

While in office, he led the PDP-Laban party. Known for his tough personality, he contrasts with his tattooed children, who have a rebellious image. Because of this, many people have labeled them the ‘worst family’ instead of the ‘first family.’

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, former President Duterte said that his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, would likely win if she decided to run for president.

He mentioned his legal troubles with the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a reason for her potential run.

Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio, known as Inday Sara, is the current vice president of the Philippines. She is the third woman to hold this position, the third vice president from Mindanao, and the youngest vice president in Philippine history.

Despite their controversial reputation, the Duterte family has slowly changed how people view politics in the Philippines. This shift started with Rodrigo Duterte.

Beneath his rough exterior, he has shown care for the environment, leading efforts to clean Manila Bay and Boracay.

He may seem like a tough provincial guy, but he genuinely cares about the people's needs.

His bold leadership has led him to challenge unfair media, demand fair taxes from rich people, confront drug lords and corrupt politicians, and fight against terrorism.

His list of achievements is long. He built thousands of roads and millions of bridges, improved airports and seaports, and strengthened the military and police.

He raised salaries for workers and soldiers, supported overseas Filipino workers, and provided universal healthcare and free college education.

His administration left behind many programs that benefit the country.

This raises an interesting question: Who is truly rude? Is it the person who speaks bluntly but has a good heart, or the one who uses polite words but does not care for ordinary people?

People often say the Dutertes are rude, but looking at their accomplishments shows a different story.

Many Filipinos respect former President Rodrigo Duterte, suggesting that a straightforward and bold leader is what they prefer.

Paolo ‘Pulong’ Zimmerman Duterte is a businessman and politician representing Davao City's 1st district since 2019. He was also a House Deputy Speaker during the 18th Congress and served as vice mayor of Davao City from 2013 until he resigned in December 2017.

While, Sebastian ‘Baste’ Zimmerman Duterte is the current Mayor of Davao City, a position he has held since June 30, 2022. He was vice mayor from 2019 to 2022 and is the youngest son of Rodrigo Duterte and the brother of Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Fighting for your health and safety, that’s Tatay Digong,” reflects the complex yet impactful legacy the Duterte family has created in Philippine politics.
