PLAYERS who regarded chess with utmost respect are beyond excited waiting for the Fide-rated tournament in Cagayan de Oro on Nov. 25 to 27.
Dubbed Mr. & Mrs. Leo G. Wabe Sr Individual Standard and Team Tatluhan Blitz, the three-day chessfest will be held at the Limketkai Mall with close to P200,000 in total cash prizes, trophies, and medals awaiting the winners.
Classical chess with one hour and 30 minutes of time control and more is the most “respectable” format in world chess competitions.
Participants have a lot more time to think their moves through that which could credibly determine the best players there are in the field.
“Walay tsamba-tsamba ang daug maoy daug gyod, ang peldi wala nay alibi peldi gyod kay taas ang time control,” said Lorenzo ‘Jun’ Cuizon, who will officiate the prestigious tourney along with fellow licensed Fide National Arbiters Joseph Gener Palero and Aldwin Daculan.
Tournament organizers Ben Wabe and Nepthalie Wabe have detailed Cleto ‘Bong’ Vasquez to act as tournament director with Arian Belly Calido as the tournament steward.
Bacolod City native Ellan Asuela, Davao Norte pride National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca, and home ground bet NM Levi Mercado, who collared the top-three honors in the just-held 1st Lumbia Mindanao Open Individual Rapid, will have to deal with the probing eyes as they wage battle anew in the Wabe Memorial Cup.
“Sa paghinumdom sa among ginikanan, damgo ko gayod nga ma Fide-rated atong chess tournament unya adunay classical chess. Dire makita kon kinsa gyod ang maayong laki,” Ben Wabe told Gold Star Daily.
The Individual Open will stake P30,000, P20,000, and P10,000 cash prizes to the top three winners.
While the Team Tatluhan Blitz with only five minutes and three-second increment time control will have the top three team finishers receiving P50,000, P25,000, and P15,000 each also with trophies.
