A daunting task awaits Cagayan de Oro chess prodigy Woman Fide Master Ruelle ‘Tawing’ Canino in the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup set to be slated on July 6-7 in Batumi, Georgia.
In the pairing matches forwarded by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines to Canino’s parents through the country’s only female Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, the 17-year-old Canino is deemed to face right away WGM Anna Shukman of Russia in the opener.
Canino’s first-round opponent is feared among the participants as Shukman is the 2025 World Junior Girls Chess champion.
“This is (going to) be a tough competition, and it’s a make or break for Tawing right in the opening round,” said Tawing’s father Ruel Canino.
According to the NCFP, the FIDE Women's World Chess Cup serves as a qualifier for the Women’s World Chess Championship, with the top finishers gaining entry to the championship title match.
This tournament aims to determine the world’s best female chess player through a knockout format. Each round is played in a best-of-two format, and if necessary, tiebreaks are conducted.
“Let us support WFM Ruelle Canino in her first-ever World Cup,” said the NCFP.
