IN remembering Cagayan de Oro’s valuable chess player Emmanuel ‘Mawi’ Acierto, a rapid chess tourney is underway today at the Inilog Grill along Tiano- Velez streets.
Dubbed ‘Mawi Acierto Open Chess Tournament,’ it stakes P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000 cash prizes to the top three winners.
The top 10 elementary and high school finishers will also receive trophies, medals, and cash prizes.

“Mawi Acierto was such a good fellow. It was unfortunate that he passed away at a young age, but he's always in our hearts,” Pastor Naphtali Wabe told Gold Star Daily.
The youthful Acierto, who died from pneumonia some 40 days ago, was part of the varsity chess teams of the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) that won the national chess championships of the now-extinct Milo Little Olympics.
