“THIS is my home,” declared Dean Antonio La Viña as he launched his memoir, Ransomed by Love, at his family’s ancestral home on Sunday, December 1.
Surrounded by relatives, friends, and former students, La Viña reflected on his roots, recalling his early days as a student at Xavier University, a Jesuit-run institution here in Cagayan de Oro.
“For sure, you are all in my book. Whether you’re in Cagayan de Oro or Bukidnon, you’re part of my story,” he told the gathering.
La Viña shared deeply personal experiences, including his battle with stage IV prostate cancer. He described the book, published by Southern Voice Printing Press, as a testament to resilience, mental health, and hope.
Amid lighthearted moments, La Viña also reminisced about his youthful days and his first love story, eliciting laughter as he recounted courting girls from Lourdes College, a Catholic school in the city.
Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Jose Cabantan and former Bayan Muna Rep. Isagani Zarate were among those who spoke at the event.
“Please tell more stories for us,” Cabantan said, encouraging La Viña to continue sharing his journey.
