THE death toll in Northern Cebu province climbed to 72 as of 7 am today, Oct. 2, with 206 injuries recorded, following the strong earthquake that struck the northern part of the province on Tuesday night, September 30.
On October 1, Governor Pamela Baricuatro declared the entire province of Cebu under a state of calamity as retrieval operations continued.
Bogo City reported the highest number of deaths at 33, along with 186 injuries. Neighboring municipalities also reported fatalities: San Remegio (20), Madridejos (10), Tabogon (five), Sogod (one), and Tabuelan (one).
Four people who died in San Remegio were playing basketball when a sports complex in the area collapsed. One of the victims was a member of the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the other three were members of the Philippine Coast Guard.
Damage estimates have reached P3 billion, including residential and commercial buildings, cracked roads, churches, and school buildings.
