WITH around P200,000 in total cash prizes at stake, the 1st Lumbia Mindanao Open Chess Championships is guaranteed to be a sure-fire hit.
It will be held at the barangay Lumbia gym in Cagayan de Oro City on Nov. 19-20 (Saturday and Sunday), according to Fide National Arbiter Lorenzo ‘Jun’ Cuizon.
Events on tap are the Individual Open with P20,000, 10,000, and P7,000 awaiting the top three winners; and the Team Tatluhan staking P50,000, P30,000, P20,000, and P10,000 to the top four team finishers.
“It’s all systems go na for this big chess event this coming weekend. We expect participants from all over the country kay first-time kini nga adunay usa ka barangay nga mag sponsor og dako kaayo nga chess tournament in terms of cash prizes,” said Cuizon as he acknowledged the father-and-son tandem of Barangay Chairman Alex Torralba and Barangay Administrator Aerol Torralba for initiating the cash-rich chess tournament.
