CAGAYAN de Oro City 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez has unveiled the "Historical Trail Book," which highlights 37 significant historical sites in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin.
This book, curated by Rodriguez himself, serves as a valuable resource for history enthusiasts, tourists, students, and individuals interested in exploring the historical landmarks of Northern Mindanao.
Considered the first of its kind in the region, Rodriguez sees this publication as his "gift to future generations."
His vision is to preserve and promote these sites for heritage tourism.
As part of his commitment, he will personally finance their development and, with the assistance of the Department of Tourism, transfer their management and operations to the local government.
The Historical Trail Book features notable locations such as the St. Agustine Metropolitan Cathedral and Casa Real, also known as the City Hall of Cagayan de Oro.
It also includes Agusan Hill, the site of the Battle of Agusan, and the Macahambus Cave, where the first Filipino victory against American troops was recorded.
In Misamis Oriental, the book showcases sites like the watchtower in Punta Sulauan, the CALUMAT Spanish Structure in Alubijid, and the Church Ruins in Jasaan.
In Camiguin, three main spots are highlighted: the Old Church Complex, Sunken Cemetery in Catarman, and the Moro Watchtower in Guinsiliban.
The book launch, which took place at Ayala Malls Centrio, was graced by Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, the Chairperson of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), adding significance to the event.
Rodriguez appointed an archaeological expert, Nanette Roa, as chairperson of the newly established Congressional Historical Committee.
Working alongside Dr. Leee Neri as the vice-chairperson, the committee played a crucial role in writing and documenting the Historical Trail Book.
In line with his commitment to preserving cultural heritage, Rodriguez introduced House Bill No. 4200 aiming to enhance the conservation and protection of Philippine cultural heritage through cultural mapping and an improved cultural heritage education program.
This bill seeks to amend the "National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009," also known as Republic Act No. 10066, according to Rodriguez.
