CITY College's development receives P110 million funding from the local government, fulfilling Mayor Rolando "Klarex" Uy's administration aspirations.
Uy stated that the majority of the funds will be utilized for land development and other essential costs to initiate the project.
Earlier, it was reported that the indigenous community in Barangay Dansolihon generously donated 60 hectares of land for the construction of the City College.
Uy clarified that the City College's location in Barangay Dansolihon is intended to offer convenient and excellent education to the youth without creating competition with other higher education institutions in the city.
Uy added that this is also a chance for those who cannot qualify for the city scholarship program.
“We are committed to making this dream a reality and we will strive to start the City College in Barangay Dansolihon next year," Uy said.
The proposal for fund allocation, which was led by Councilor Zussete Magtajas-Daba of the City Council's education committee, has been approved after undergoing review and evaluation.
Expressing her gratitude, Magtajas-Daba thanked her colleagues for approving the ordinance and the newly allocated fund of P110 million.
The fund amounting to P110 million is divided into two parts: P100 million for campus or land development, and the remaining P10 million will be allocated for operations, as stated by Kag Magtajas-Daba.
Earlier, she expressed that, like Mayor Uy, the City College has been a long-standing aspiration of the people of Cagayan de Oro.
She highlighted that the college would particularly cater to the marginalized students, including the indigenous communities residing within the city.
According to her, the establishment of the City College is a significant stride towards offering affordable and excellent education to the youth who encounter challenges in pursuing their college studies.
The mayor thanked Councilor Magtajas-Daba for her hard work and dedication in securing a bright future for the city's youth.
Sheila Lumbatan, the mayor's chief of staff, stated that the courses are a crucial step towards achieving the city's goal of becoming an educational hub in the region.
“The creation of city college is part of Mayor Klarex's executive agenda,” said Lumbatan.
She stated that the broad selection of courses would provide students from all backgrounds with the chance to pursue their aspirations and contribute to their community's growth.
Lumbatan added that the Cagayan de Oro City College is set to offer a diverse range of courses to cater to the needs of its students.
The introduction of these courses is aimed at providing students with various options to choose from and to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge that are in demand in today's job market.
According to her, it also reflects the commitment of the city college to provide quality education that is relevant to the needs of the community.
Among the courses that will be offered are Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA); Bachelor of Science in Information System (BSIS); Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BSE);
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES); Bachelor of Science in Sanitary Engineering (BSSE); Bachelor of Science in Industrial Security Management (BSISM); Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant;
Creative Industries; IT-BPO; Health, Wellness and Other Social Services; Ladderized Diploma Programs; Construction; Artificial Intelligence; Data Science Analytics; Cybersecurity, and Cloud Computing.
The idea to establish the City College began during the first district representative's initial term in Congress.
According to Lumbatan, the City College will be established in Barangay Dansolihon with the intention of avoiding competition with the current colleges and universities in Cagayan de Oro.
Furthermore, she mentioned that with the P110 million allotted for land development, the Uy administration would endeavor to commence the City College's operations in the same Barangay by next year.
She explained that the City College would offer affordable and excellent education to the youth of Cagayan de Oro.
Dr. Alicia Anghay, the executive director of the Local School Board, Ms. Maria Victoria Trinidad, the Vocational School Administrator at Cagayan de Oro Technical Vocational Institute (CDO TVI), and Ms. Roxanne Jul Tandang, a TWG member, were among those who attended the meeting.
Uy earlier explained the results of their study, which included a site visit to the school location.
To ensure convenience for students and teachers, the TWG team presented necessary steps for the city college's launch, such as land preparation and road construction.
