A BARANGAY chairperson yesterday called on city hall to speed up work aimed at providing a relocation site for families facing displacement from a slum known as Sto. Niño.
Delia Wabe, Barangay 31 chairwoman, made the appeal as tension gripped Sto. Niño, a place near Limketkai Center and Cogon market, as villagers waited for a demolition team to serve a writ and tear down over 250 houses.
Wabe said many residents prepared for a confrontation, and were ready to block the demolition team.
“Nangandam kini sila nga ilang babagan kung mag-demolish. Asa ta man na sila ipamutang kungmag-demolish?” asked Wabe rhetorically.
She said she feared violence. “Hadlok kita nga magubot gyud kini. Problema kini sa barangay kay manukol man gyud kini. Nag-andam andam na kini sila daan,” she said.
Wabe appealed to city hall to act fast and provide a suitable relocation site to over 250 families.
Wabe said the families have volunteered to demolish their houses if city hall could assure them that they would be properly relocated.
City hall has asked a court for more time to relocate the families. The city council has passed a resolution last week asking Judge Eleuteria Algodon of Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) Branch 2 for an extension. (lito rulona)
