CAMIGUIN — 177 cyclists took on Camiguin’s circumferential road on Aug. 23, combining a 64-kilometer recreational ride with stops at some of the island’s scenic and heritage attractions.
The Isle Cycle Island Bike Fun Tour drew more participants than organizers expected, exceeding the initial target of 100 cyclists.
The noncompetitive ride started at 5 a.m. at the New Provincial Capitol Building and passed through Tongatok Cliff, the Old Church Ruins, Sagay Freedom Park, and parts of Guinsiliban and Mahinog before returning to the provincial capitol.
The activity allowed participants to experience Camiguin’s attractions while cycling around the island.
“Nagtapok ang mga cyclists sa New Capitol Building kay mao kini ang sinugdanan sa fun tour,” Tourism Operation Officer Floren Mae Tarnate said.
The tour was initially open only to participants aged 18 and above. Organizers later allowed minors to join with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian.
Six designated pit stops were set up along the route, where cyclists could rest, take photos and collect stickers as proof of completing the ride.
Participants also had to submit three individual photos taken at the pit stops to qualify for the raffle.
Race bibs with spaces for the stickers were distributed during registration, briefing and orientation at the Camiguin Convention Center.
Safety along the route
Organizers reminded participants to prepare their bicycles and wear appropriate safety equipment, particularly helmets.
Fire stations and medical teams were also positioned along the route to provide assistance during the activity.
“Atong unahon ang safety, busa palihog pagsul-ob sa hustong safety gear,” Tourism Operation Officer Rojhen Yven Pantallano said.
For cyclist Eric Jean Cadayday, the ride offered a quieter way to experience the island.
“No traffic, no noise. Just pure island calm and endless paddling,” Cadayday said.
The Isle Cycle Island Bike Fun Tour was held as part of preparations for Camiguin’s 47th Lanzones Festival, scheduled for Oct. 18 to 25.
The Provincial Tourism Department organized the activity in partnership with the Department of Tourism-Northern Mindanao and other local partners.
For Camiguin, the tour combined cycling, outdoor recreation and visits to local attractions as the province prepares for its annual festival. (With reports from Jessa Khen A. Baclay and Recthie T. Paculba)
