INCREASING complaints about unclear and poorly visible traffic signages across Cagayan de Oro are putting both local drivers and visitors at risk of violations, confusion, and accidents.
Motorists have raised concerns over faded, damaged or obstructed signages in busy intersections such as Cogon Market, Divisoria, National Highway along Kauswagan and Lapasan.
Common road signs like “No Left Turn,” “One Way,” and “No U-Turn” are either barely visible or blocked by trees, electric posts or hanging advertisements.
Some traffic lights also lack accompanying directional signs that should guide drivers properly.
Adding to the frustration, motorists from neighboring provinces like Bukidnon, Iligan and Marawi have expressed disappointment, saying they were issued traffic violation tickets without understanding the rules due to the lack of clear signages.
“Hindi ko talaga nakita yung ‘No Left Turn’ sign kasi maliit at nasa likod pa ng poste. Bigla na lang akong pinara at sinita ng enforcer. Hindi naman ako taga-rito, paano ko malalaman,” shared a driver from Marawi City who traveled to Cagayan de Oro to visit his sisters.
Some visitors also claimed that instead of being guided, they were immediately flagged down and fined by traffic enforcers who did not consider their unfamiliarity with the city’s roads and poor sign visibility.
The Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) acknowledged the growing complaints and assured that an assessment is ongoing to identify locations where signages need replacement, repair or repositioning.
“We understand the concerns, especially from visitors. Road safety starts with clear information. We are currently inspecting problem areas and will deploy new signages soon,” an RTA officer said.
Motorists are calling on the city government and RTA to prioritize this issue, emphasizing that traffic enforcement should be paired with proper road guidance, not just penalties.
They believe that addressing the signage problem is not just about compliance, but about ensuring fairness and safety for all — locals and visitors alike.
