RESIDENTS across the MGM area — covering Magsaysay, Gingoog City and Medina in eastern Misamis Oriental — experienced a series of unscheduled power outages as Typhoon Tino swept through the region.
The first outage began around 9:32 pm on Nov. 3, before the typhoon’s landfall, and lasted until 8:30 am the following day. Power went out again at about 10 am today, Nov. 4.
Roughly five minutes later, the Misamis Oriental II Rural Electric Service Cooperative (Moresco II) announced on Facebook that the outage was caused by a tripped 69-kilovolt subtransmission line main breaker at the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) Nasipit Substation.
The breaker reportedly shut down due to a permanent line-to-line fault on Line AB, about 42 kilometers away.
The previous night, the same area suffered blackouts about two hours before Typhoon Tino made landfall in the Dinagat Islands.
Moresco II said that outage was also caused by a tripped main breaker at the NGCP Nasipit Substation, following a permanent line-to-ground fault on Line A located in the Tagcatong hinterland, approximately 8.6 kilometers away.
While the cooperative did not specify the location of the Tagcatong hinterland, checks indicate it is in Carmen, Agusan del Sur.
As of this writing, Moresco II has not identified the location of the fault that caused today’s outage, and power remains unrestored.
