Dave Achondo WE all need a good sleep but who can get one if there are just inconsiderate business establishments that create noise even in the wee hours. I live near the Rotunda in Cagayan de Oro and I have been living here since birth, surrounded by apartments that are occupied by students. A peaceful and simple community that has been providing me with peace and security for as long as I can remember, but here comes an establishment that is relentless in preventing me and my neighbors from getting that good sleep. If you’re a Kagay-anon, you will know what establishment I am talking about--“CDO Bar.” It has great music and provides good service, no doubt about that. It has a live band almost nightly, playing a mash-up of genres depending on the band, and it’s open past 12 midnight. That’s already milking it--it has become a nuisance and it cannot continue. Whoever owns this establishment might be under the impression that the building was designed to be sound-proof. Well, it is not. It’s so open that their loud sound system reverberates everywhere, towards all directions. I and other residents are affected by this, and we are starting to get so frustrated. We called on the police to help, and to tell this establishment to tone it down. They comply, but the next day, they’re at it again. It’s a never-ending cycle. The last time I text-ed a hotline provided by the Macasandig police station, I didn’t get a reply. I thought to myself that maybe, it’s not working anymore due to the new Hotline 8888. I text-ed it in the hope that they will act. I hope they did because it was around 2 am when I reported it, and I saw their patrol car pass at around 4 am, exiting Rotunda from Tomas Saco-15 Sts.. So maybe they did because it was silent when I got home. Thank you very much for that. Some of my neighbors put up with it because they believe it’s hopeless, but they shouldn’t. I can still see something positive, so it’s best to remain optimistic that it will be okay really soon before things really get out of control. This isn’t just me. The only time your neighbor would understand a situation like this one is when you’re singing karaoke at home celebrating something. They won’t complain, and understand you because it only happens rarely. That’s how understanding we Filipinos are. Establishments such as this one however deliberately deprive you of sleep. They deliberately disregard the fact that the area where they do business is within or close to residential areas. Twice a week is, perhaps, “acceptable” (Friday and Saturday). Go ahead knock yourselves out. But when it becomes a daily--from Monday to Sunday--that’s already public disturbance. For heaven’s sake, there are children who have to wake up early in the morning for school; senior citizens who need ample time of sleep; and other people who need to wake up early for work! So please tone it down.
