IN a stunning turn of events, the underdog Surigao Diamond Knights Seniors team has triumphed over the defending champions Cebu Madridejos in a thrilling tiebreaker at the ACAPI 4 match finals concluded recently via online chess platform.
Led by Arena Grandmaster Rey C. Urbiztondo, who also serves as the president of the Association of Chess Amateurs in the Philippines, Inc. (ACAPI), the team includes fellow Surigaonons Reynaldo Quinonez and Joselito Serna.

The victory was a remarkable achievement for the Surigao Diamond Knights Seniors troika of Urbiztondo, Quinonez, and Serna who are expected to reinforce the executive side of the Mindanao squad in its 30-board showdown with the Visayas team in the 3rd Governor Henry Oaminal Chess Open Tournament now underway in Oroquieta City.
The Davao Durianburg Stallions, however, went on to capture the overall supremacy in the ACAPI online chessfest for a total of six consolidated independent categories.
“We’re so happy to share a bit of spotlight in the nationwide Acapi amateur chess tournament. And we’re so proud too nga makaaway pa gihapon diay ang mga seniors sa Mindanao chess,” Urbiztondo told Gold Star Daily.
