CAGAYAN de Oro City — Disaster preparedness starts with everyday actions, and residents, schools, and barangays all have a role to play in making communities safer before emergencies strike.
As the city launched National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) 2026, government agencies encouraged the public to take part in preparedness efforts under this year's theme, "Naghahanda at Kumikilos Tungo sa Panatag na Bagong Pilipinas."
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Northern Mindanao joined the kickoff at SM CDO Downtown, where visitors explored disaster preparedness exhibits, rescue equipment, emergency vehicles, and interactive displays organized by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council–Region X (RDRRMC-X).
Officials reminded residents that preparing for disasters begins with simple steps: knowing evacuation centers, following official advisories, keeping emergency supplies ready, and joining community disaster drills.
Schools were also urged to strengthen disaster preparedness by teaching students what to do before, during, and after emergencies, helping build a culture of safety from an early age.
Barangays, meanwhile, were encouraged to organize preparedness activities, share timely safety information, and identify vulnerable residents to improve emergency response when disasters occur.
The NDRM celebration underscored that disaster resilience is a shared responsibility. By staying informed, joining local preparedness programs, and working together, communities can better protect lives and reduce the impact of disasters.
