DURING a recent session at the Batasan, Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez voiced concerns over the growing Chinese student population in the Philippines and China’s ongoing encroachment in the West Philippine Sea. The discussion, which involved Manila Representative Benny Abante, shed light on the heightened tensions in the region.
Rodriguez underscored his firm stance against Chinese activities in the West Philippine Sea, citing the significant ruling of the UN Arbitral Tribunal in 2016 that refuted China’s claims in the area. Despite international legal clarity, China has continued to harass Filipino fishermen and conduct provocative actions, flouting established norms.
In addition to maritime disputes, Rodriguez urged caution regarding the increasing number of Chinese students in the country. He expressed apprehensions about potential espionage risks posed by these students amid strained bilateral relations.
Emphasizing the need to prioritize national security, Rodriguez highlighted commitments from US officials to support the Philippines under the Mutual Defense Treaty. This treaty ensures US assistance in case of hostilities involving Philippine vessels in the region.
