THE Aboitiz Foundation, in partnership with Pilmico Foods Corporation and the Department of Education (DepEd) Iligan City, handed over solar power and internet systems to five remote elementary schools in Barangay Rogongon, Iligan City, on December 11, 2025.
The turnover ceremony, held at Libandayan Elementary School, marked a milestone for Project Aurora PH, an initiative aiming to bridge the digital divide in geographically isolated areas.
The beneficiary schools—Salingsing, Libandayan, Binasan, Katipunan, and Kianibong Elementary Schools—are now equipped with solar-powered electricity and high-speed Starlink internet, opening doors to digital learning resources.
"This initiative reflects like-minded organizations united to uplift remote schools," said Aboitiz Foundation President Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, adding, "Aurora PH ensures no learner is left behind."
Dr. Vilma Arazo of DepEd Iligan hailed the project, noting that many schools in the district still lack electricity and internet access.
"Reliable power and connectivity enhance lessons and expand resources for learners," she said.
For the educators on the ground, the impact is immediate.
"No electricity meant darkness. Now, learners access TV and digital lessons," said Libandayan ES Officer-in-Charge Santaliah Mansumayan, adding that teachers can now use videos to clarify concepts beyond textbooks.
Despite this progress, challenges persist. Libandayan ES currently faces a classroom shortage, operating with only four teachers and two makeshift classrooms for Kindergarten through Grade 6. Mansumayan appealed for additional classrooms as enrollment continues to grow.
Land ownership hurdles also remain a significant barrier. Binasan ES, situated on ancestral Higaonon tribe land, cannot access government funds due to titling issues, making private donations and partnerships critical for its development.
"Aurora PH has reached 44 schools nationwide, targeting 300 of 1,500 last-mile schools," Hontiveros-Malvar added, reaffirming the foundation's commitment to inclusive education and sustainability.
