THE scenic Iligan River Esplanade in Barangay Santiago came alive again as Iliganons gathered for the third year of Pamahaw sa Suba, a symbolic breakfast event promoting environmental awareness, wellness, and unity among the city’s diverse communities.
Agnes Clerigo Maingat, chair of this year’s event, pointed out the Esplanade’s role not only as a wellness destination but also as a venue for community collaboration and environmental stewardship, particularly through mangrove planting.
Maingat said organizers initially explored applying for a Guinness World Record attempt to beat Laoag City’s five-kilometer boodle fight record.
However, the registration fee of P765,000 led them to refocus on aligning the celebration with government initiatives instead.
“So, we decided to make this an occasion to highlight unity among Iliganons. Our theme, ‘unity in diversity: one table for Iligan,’ perfectly captures what this event stands for,” Maingat said.
She added that Pamahaw sa Suba also celebrates Iligan’s ongoing progress — from its growing economy to various awards earned by the city and its leaders.
“Let’s celebrate and call for unity so that Iligan’s development will continue,” she said.
Councilor Marlene Young echoed the message of solidarity.
“Despite our differences, Iliganons can really come together and be united for a better and progressive Iligan,” she said, noting that even as a tri-people community, unity remains possible.
A total of 33 offices participated this year — 16 joining the contest and 17 offering support. Cash prizes of P10,000, P7,000, and P5,000 were awarded to the winners.
Mayor Frederick W. Siao, who attended the breakfast, expressed gratitude to all participating offices and partner organizations.
“Ang LGU Iligan magpasalamat sa ubang upisina ug partners nga dili connected sa LGU nga ni-join karon buntaga. Na-appreciate gyud nako kaayo ang inyong participation, and I’m very happy about that,” Siao said.
