THEY could be another potential source of medals for Misamis Oriental in this year’s keenly-awaited Batang Pinoy national championship.
Bannered by Palaro campaigners Harleye Christian Jake Pores and Glenn Partolan, the 14-man Paglaum boxing team showed great potential to scale greater heights as it dominated the 2024 Cagayan de Oro Fiesta Amateur boxing extravaganza held recently at downtown Divisoria Plaza.
So impressive was the Governor Peter Unabia-backed boxing team’s performance that it dropped just a single bout in 14 fight matches.
First to lace on the gloves is the unbeaten female boxer Shairylle Pores from Claveria town who easily defeated her opponent.
She set the tone of the Paglaum squad's whirlwind finish that left the Balingoan boy Filomeno Abanggan as the only casualty of the well-prepared wards of coaches Leonardo Pores and Mariano Baja in the pre-fiesta showdown marred earlier by a heavy downpour.
Pores’ older brother Christian Jake, a Palarong Pambansa silver medalist, and fellow Palaro pug Glenn Partolan also handily won their respective matches. And so Samboy Sardalla, Herick Humaynon, John Geric Nillama, Roque Suyom, Ruel Sajol, Greg John Emanuel Somogong, Mark Justine Sabiahan, Jhouriel Cuhlaman, Jason Sandigan, and Franz Balog, almost all of them honed their talents in the Baguio City-like atmosphere of Claveria.
Known as the beater of male brawlers, the 15-year-old Shairelle Pores sustained her unbeaten streak against fellow lady fighters.
The younger Pores is best remembered for missing last year’s Batang Pinoy action in Manila as she was slightly older than at 14.
“Naa sa atong entry sa Misor pero wala gitugotan sa Batang Pinoy organizers nga moaway kay underage pa daw,” Barangay Kagawad Edward Humaynon of Panampawan, Claveria told Gold Star Daily.
“Sa iyang mga away gawas ug sulod sa probinsiya wala pay babae nga nakapeldi kang Shairelle Pores. Bisan mga lalake nga kaparang iyang giparot,” Humaynon added.
Jeffrey Morial, the trusted buddy of Paglaum Sports caretaker Chrysostom ‘Tammy’ Cailing, said that barring unforeseen glitches amateur boxing will be given a much-needed break in the province’s Batang Pinoy campaign apart from the medal-rich chess, athletics, and karatedo sports disciplines.
And Morial agreed that Misamis Oriental’s sensational lady boxer is a potential source of gold.
“We’re excited to watch her soon compete in the national sports boxing arena,” Morial said.
