PHILIPPINE chess, especially the Mindanao chess community, is brimming anew with excitement after the Ozamiz City’s announcement on the staging of the half-a-million 5th Asenso Open Chess Tournament on July 12-13 at the City Gymnasium of Ozamiz.
“For the fifth consecutive time, big-time chess returns to Mindanao, thanks to Asenso Ozamiz City and the Asenso Misamis Occidental Team,” said Arena Grandmaster Rey Urbiztondo.
“Join us to play alongside the best in Philippine chess at the rapid tournament and simul, and witness the thrilling Battle of Champions. Don’t miss the exciting third rematch between the Mindanao and Visayas selections, as well as the epic showdown of Northern Mindanao against The Rest of Mindanao,” urges Urbiztondo, tasked by Misamis Occidental governor Henry Oaminal to oversee one of the biggest chess tournaments in Mindanao often held twice a year.

With P505,000 in total cash prizes up for grabs, this event is guaranteed to be a sure-fire hit just the same of the previous editions.
Governor Oaminal, lawyer-turned Ozamiz City Mayor Sam Fuentes, Sancho Fernando ‘Ando’ Oaminal and fellow MisOcc congressman, Atty. Henry ‘Indy’ Oaminal Jr will be on hand to grace the opening ceremony.
They will also be participating in the simultaneous display of Asia's first Grandmaster and Hall of Famer Eugene Torre.
