THE Local Government of Cagayan de Oro on Friday entered into a partnership with Xavier University’s Chemical Engineering Department to promote environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on the same day.
The joint effort is part of the “Optimizing Urban Sustainability: Empowering Cagayan de Oro City with Smart Decision Support for Waste-to-Energy (Sweep CDOC)” program.
The initiative aims to leverage scientific research and technological solutions to enhance waste-to-energy processes, minimize environmental impact, and support the city’s goal of becoming a greener and cleaner urban center.
Engr. Armen Cuenca, head of City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro), expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential.
“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to sustainability. With Xavier’s expertise, we can develop solutions that benefit our environment and community,” he said.
Xavier University officials also voiced their support.
Dr. Maria Santos, Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department, highlighted the university’s role in providing technical support and research insights to ensure the project’s success.
The initiative has received backing from Councilor Roger Abaday, chair of the Environment Committee.
“This partnership signifies our collective responsibility to build a more sustainable future for Cagayan de Oro. I am proud of our city’s proactive stance on environmental issues,” he remarked.
City information officer Jade Adecer noted that the Sweep CDOC project aligns with the city’s broader environmental goals.
He added that the program could serve as a model for other urban areas seeking sustainable waste management and energy solutions.
“Led by Mayor Uy, city officials and academics are committed to building a cleaner, sustainable future for all as they begin this journey,” Adecer said.
He also stressed that the partnership aims to transform waste into a valuable resource, fostering a greener future.
