CAGAYAN de Oro residents of Cagayan de Oro are increasingly contending with significant traffic congestion, a challenge exacerbated by a rising vehicle population and ongoing infrastructure development.
The city, a key urban center in Northern Mindanao, experiences a projected annual growth rate of 8% in vehicle numbers, contributing to daily traffic volumes that can reach as many as 40,000 vehicles on major thoroughfares.
This surge in vehicles, coupled with limited parking spaces, has led to frequent bottlenecks and extended travel times, particularly during peak hours.
City officials have acknowledged the problem, with Mayor Rolando Uy forming a 40-person Quick Response Team-Special Operations Group (QRT-SOG) in late 2022 to manage traffic flow and clear obstructions.
The Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) has identified unfinished infrastructure projects by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as a contributing factor to the city's traffic woes.
In response to the growing concern, ongoing and planned infrastructure projects aim to alleviate the congestion.
Updates as of June 2025 indicate progress on significant undertakings, including new bridges and a substantial P3.963 billion flyover project in Barangay Gusa, designed to improve vehicular movement across critical intersections.
While these initiatives are underway, the city continues to explore long-term solutions, including improvements to public transportation and the potential for new road networks to better distribute traffic across the metropolitan area.
