ON a regular day, most of us work with figures, graphs, mobile gadgets, internet connections, customer concerns, network connections, and more. Yet, there are days we are lured to the worlds of entertainment, sports, and beauty pageants. And this is most evident during awards and playoff seasons like the Oscars, Grammys, NBA finals, and Ms. Universe.
Movie and tv enthusiasts are glued to their tv screens or mobile gadgets between January to June and September of each year to satiate their love for the silver screen, television, sports, and music.
When you're already working, it would be hard to watch the Oscars, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Grammys live because of the time difference. Don't even bother asking your boss about the need to take a leave for it. I know you wish it is like a birthday leave. Your next best option is to watch the replay. Nothing beats, though, watching it live among millions of viewers.
The NBA Best of Seven series makes all the men go gaga for a few weeks each year. You see them talking before work, during noon breaks, and after work. It never stops. They greet each other in the morning with the latest scores. It's fun watching them argue up to the minutest detail of the game. A colleague even has the basketball statistics and data of each player that could put to shame a sports anchor.
It's not every day that you see them all hepped up except when talking or aiming for the KRAs. I couldn't imagine if the NBA finals were between November and December when targets are hollering for you. It's crunch time! That would be the day!
Competitions wouldn't be complete without beauty pageants. If NBA is to men, Ms. Universe is to women. The other half of the office would be busy talking about it during noon breaks, complete with video clips of the show and commentaries. The commentaries are more interesting than the show itself. I love listening to the side stories from a colleague with his analyses of the contestants and the pageant. It goes from being serious to hilarious.
Each of these events happens only once every year. It wouldn't hurt to join in the uproar. It's one way of strengthening camaraderie and relieving stress. And as they say, you do as the Romans do to maintain "world peace."
