By GERALD LEIGH LAQUINON Correspondent THE New People’s Army (NPA) in northern Mindanao yesterday returned the money and belongings of a former police officer turned politician whom rebels stabbed to death in Gingoog City. The rebels sent the package to DxIF-Bombo Radyo in Cagayan de Oro, and requested it to deliver the sealed package to the family of retired SPO4 Francisco Baguiz. The package reportedly contains cash and personal effects taken from the man rebels killed because of a death sentence meted out by the group. “We are asking you to hand over these confiscated effects of SPO4 Francisco Baguiz consisting of documents, wrist watch, tablet, and cash amounting to P22,447.75 to his family,” writes Allan Juanito, spokesperson of the NPA for North Central Mindanao Region, in the letter to the radio station. The documents include Baguiz’s passport, immigration papers, driver’s license, RCBC Mastercard, BDO Debit Card, pocket notebook, nine assorted IDs, three business cards, three passport-sized photographs, and various receipts. In May 16, communist rebels carried out the killed Baguiz in Sitio Kidahon, Barangay, Malinao, Gingoog City because he was allegedly abusive and oppressed indigenous communities, accusations the slain man’s widow strongly denied when she faced Cagayan de Oro reporters. Gingoog Mayor Marie Guingona, who chose Baguiz to be part of her ticket in the last elections, “vehemently and unequivocally denounced his dastardly murder for he was a simple and kind man.” She said Baguiz’s death was a “tragic loss for our city and our people.”
