CAGAYAN DE ORO City — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) successfully energized the Unidos-Caticlan 69-kilovolt (kV) Line at 1:31 PM on February 13, 2026, completing restoration work nearly a month ahead of its March target and fully normalizing power transmission in parts of Aklan Province.
In an advisory, NGCP Communications Officer for Mindanao Elizabeth Ladaga said transmission services for AKELCO’s Caticlan and Boracay substations have returned to normal following the installation of a new 69kV XLPE underground cable and the rehabilitation of the entire Unidos-Caticlan line.
The temporary bypass line used during repairs has been safely disconnected.
To fast-track the project, NGCP deployed 24 line gangs from the Visayas and South Luzon to navigate the challenging mountainous terrain.
Work was further complicated by Tropical Storm Basyang and limited operating hours under Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) regulations.
Despite these challenges, the project was completed safely in time for the upcoming ASEAN Summit and Boracay’s peak summer season.
“Restoring the Unidos-Caticlan 69kV Line ahead of schedule demonstrates NGCP’s commitment to reliable power, especially in key tourist areas like Caticlan and Boracay,” NGCP said.
The line, previously operated by Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO), sustained significant damage in September 2025.
Following a resolution by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), NGCP assumed responsibility, conducted a thorough assessment, and promptly addressed corrosion and structural weaknesses.
Careful planning minimized disruption to consumers, reducing the projected six shutdowns to four scheduled outages on January 27, February 3, February 12, and February 13.
NGCP is also advancing the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138kV Interconnection Project, targeted for completion in August 2026, which will further strengthen power reliability in the province.
