One month carnivore—er, ketovore. Yay. And that’s despite the high-carb goodies at Centrio Mall’s Big Bite. I never expected to stick to this diet for this long—miracles do come true.

Surprises have sprinkled my ketovore journey so far. For one, I’ve watched “Project Hail Mary” twice already. The first time, I slept. The second time, I forced myself to stay awake so I could understand it—not just stay awake for Sandra Hüller’s karaoke scene. Am I hoping for a third time? After all, “third time’s a charm,” as the saying goes.

I don’t know if there’s any connection between ketovore and movies, but I do believe that ketovore made it possible for me to watch “Project Hail Mary” without falling asleep again—and that’s sans popcorn.

The movie commands so much buzz—out-shouting anything the Jollibee mascot could probably muster if he were suddenly given a voice.

Even its lead star, Ryan Gosling, has been on the receiving end of that buzz, along with his co-star Rocky—more specifically, the character named Rocky.

And here I was, completely clueless about what all the ado was about, despite having watched it. Okay—I slept through it, which could explain the cluelessness.

So I felt it was my duty to watch it again, which seldom happens nowadays, considering my usual reluctance to travel from uptown to downtown Cagayan de Oro, where the better cinemas are located.

I’ve got a feeling, though, that all I really wanted was to find out why Hüller (as Eva Stratt) was singing Harry Styles’s “Sign of the Times.” Although I could already glean the reason from its lyrics: “Just stop your crying / It’s a sign of the times / Welcome to the final show / Hope you’re wearing your best clothes / You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky / You look pretty good down here / But you ain’t really good / If we never learn, we been here before / Why are we always stuck and running from / The bullets? / The bullets.”

I think I now have a second favorite song. My only favorite before this had always been Sting’s “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You”: “If I ever lose my faith in you / There’d be nothing left for me to do.”

So stop your crying and keep the faith.

Anyway, “Project Hail Mary” is about—spoiler alert—how to stop the sun from dimming, which is caused by astrophage microbes feeding on its energy. Imagine Earth with no sun. Hence the urgency to find an antidote.

Even with the sun shining brightly nowadays, the thought of the “final show” lingers whenever tensions rise in the Middle East—no thanks to the world’s dependence on oil from that region.

Perhaps if we shift to another source of power, the world will stop depending on oil. The sun provides light, yet humanity is only now beginning to appreciate its power by installing solar panels on rooftops and roof decks.

The sun has many other uses, which we sadly take for granted because it’s always there.
