By BEN SERRANO Correspondent BUTUAN City--The Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency seized 50 more drums of hydrochloric acid, an ingredient in shabu, from a company here on Thursday night. The move was a follow through to the Bureau of Customs’ seizure of 320 drums of the chemical at the Mindanao Container Port in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental this Feb. 14. The BOC seized the shipment in four 20-foot containers after the consignee, Juchem Enterprises, failed to present importation permit, said BOC spokesman Neil Estrella. The firm is located at Purok 1, Pulido St. Doongan, Butuan. PDEA director for Caraga Gilbert Buenafe said initial investigation showed that the shipment seized in Misamis Oriental was for the mining company Apex Mining. While the chemical is also being used in making medicines for cough and asthma, Buenafe said the problem is that the firm Juchem Enterprises has been importing chemicals for at least four years now, and there is uncertainty on exactly how it was used. “Was it really used for mining purposes? How do we know?” he asked rhetorically. “Legal yung kanilang business. Ang problema lang eh wala silang license to import such chemicals kasi T1 at T4 lang yung license nila. Wala sila nung T-5 license.” Buenafe said they searched the firm after a court issued a warrant.
