BUTUAN City – A community college in the town of Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental, took home the grand prize during the Kahimunan Festival 2020 Street Dancing competition here Sunday.
The annual competition coincides with the fiesta of Barangay Libertad’s Sto. Niño Diocesan Shrine which is celebrated every third Sunday of January.
Competing teams of dancers coming from Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao City, Butuan City and Misamis Oriental performed on a three-kilometer stretch of the highway.
The performance of Magsaysay Community College group, with the Manobo-inspired costumes and movements, made it bag a P450,000-prize. It bested besting seven other groups from different parts of Caraga.
The Magsaysay contingent also won two other awards: best in costume and best in choreography.
The team replicated its success during Gingoog City’s 40th Grand Kaliga Festival Street Dancing and Ritual Competition 2019, when it emerged as grand champion and bagged the best in costume and most lively performance awards.
Zillovia National High School from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, followed and won the 1st runner-up prize, including a P350,000. It was also adjudged best in musicality.
The group from Santiago, Agusan del Norte, was 2nd runner up, and it received P300,000. It was also adjudged best in street performance.
Lt. Abel Mutia Bulawan, Butuan police spokesman, said some 8,000 people watched the street dancing competition round at the sport complex in Barangay Libertad.
