THE National Bureau of Investigation-Iligan District Office has filed charges of usurpation of authority against a man accused of posing as an NBI agent.
Brenneth Ryan Buot was charged with violating Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code on September 3 before the City Prosecutor’s Office.
The case stems from a complaint that Buot falsely claimed to be an NBI agent to encourage people to invest in a company called FU DALU Agricultural Products Trading.
According to NBI-Iligan, Buot allegedly showed a fake NBI badge and identification, carried firearms, and introduced himself as an agent at private and public gatherings.
In one instance, he reportedly picked up complainants from the airport while being escorted by armed individuals in police and military uniforms, creating the impression he had official government authority.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Buot displaying his NBI badge, ID and firearms while boasting about his alleged NBI affiliation.
The NBI’s Human Resource Management Division confirmed that Buot is not an NBI employee.
NBI Director Jaime B. Santiago commended the Iligan office for the successful case filing, saying the bureau “will not tolerate any illegal activities that could harm the reputation of the NBI.”
He warned that the agency will relentlessly pursue individuals who misrepresent themselves as NBI agents.
