THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) has begun distributing new license plates nationwide, prioritizing private motorcycles, LTO Gingoog District Head Richie Caingles confirmed.
Caingles said the new plates are larger, clearer, color-coded, and easier to read than the old versions.
The rollout is part of the government’s effort to prevent the use of motorcycles in criminal activities under Republic Act No. 11235, as amended by RA 12209.
RA 12209, signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on May 9, updates the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act to enhance safety regulations and penalties for violators.
Each region has a unique color combination. For example, plates in Northern Mindanao have a gray bottom and white top, while those in Caraga have a pink bottom and white top.
Caingles urged all private motorcycle owners with missing, old, or damaged plates to secure the new plates at any LTO district office in Region 10 or at the regional office. He clarified that although all motorcycles are eligible, private units are currently being prioritized.
More than 500 new plates have been issued since last Thursday, he added.
Caingles also warned that the LTO may begin seizing motorcycles with outdated or damaged plates starting in October. The new plates are free of charge.
