A major change in the military’s leadership structure in Central Mindanao was formalized last week, with the Office of the President immediately expressing strong support for the new commander.
Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Antonio Ernesto Lagdameo Jr. hailed the assumption of Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir R. Cagara as the new Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central.
In an emailed statement Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 18, Lagdameo called the appointment a “decisive reinforcement to the administration’s peace and development agenda in Mindanao.”
Lagdameo commended the Army leadership for selecting a commander whose extensive experience “aligns strongly with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision for a safer, more resilient, and more progressive Bangsamoro and South-Central Mindanao.”
“Major General Cagara’s distinguished track record in territorial defense, intelligence, and civil-military operations makes him exceptionally fit to lead one of the Army’s most critical divisions. We welcome his leadership and look forward to continued collaboration in sustaining peace and ensuring lasting stability in the region,” Lagdameo’s statement read.
Cagara, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Maalab” Class of 1993, has over three decades of service. His designation reflects the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)’s continued confidence in his capabilities.
Regional Security Implications
The operational area of the 6th ID borders Northern Mindanao. Changes in its leadership and strategic focus often have cascading effects on regional stability, particularly regarding the movement of threat groups and regional security coordination.
Effective leadership in the 6th ID is vital, as it helps contain threats that might otherwise spill over into neighboring regions like Northern Mindanao (Region 10). Coordinated security efforts and intelligence sharing between the 6th ID and Northern Mindanao’s military commands are crucial for preventing the movement of armed elements.
Lagdameo also extended appreciation to outgoing commander Maj. Gen. Gumiran for his “steadfast leadership and clear results in strengthening regional security,” noting that Gumiran’s new designation in Western Mindanao also reflects the AFP’s continued confidence in his abilities.
The Change of Command Ceremony was attended by top military officials, local chief executives, civilian personnel, and members of the media.
Lagdameo closed his message by reaffirming Malacañang’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces:
“As the 6th Infantry Division enters a new chapter under Major General Cagara, the Office of the President stands ready to work hand in hand with our men and women in uniform to deliver genuine peace, stability, and development to Mindanao.”
