JOURNALISTS and communications educators in Cebu gathered for a workshop to learn how to adapt to the changing news landscape as artificial intelligence reshapes newsrooms.

The full-day event, titled “Beyond the Headlines: A Workshop for Community Journalists,’ was designed to equip participants with skills in AI while reinforcing the values of ethical and responsible journalism.

“This workshop aims to help address pressing concerns and challenges which community journalists face daily in their work, such as digital safety, mental wellness, as well as challenges brought forth by AI and its impact on the newsroom,” said Atty. Maria Jane Paredes of STET–Women in Cebu Media, one of the event organizers.

The workshop was a collaboration between STET, International Media Support (IMS), the Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University, PLDT Inc., and Smart Communications Inc.

Journalist and media adviser Jaemark Tordecilla offered insights into how AI can support journalists in their daily work, including summarizing information, generating story ideas, and transforming content.

The discussion highlighted that while AI can enhance efficiency, it requires responsible use and careful review for accuracy.

Participants also received practical tips on digital security from Innopub Media co-founder Max Limpag, who stressed that digital security is a crucial responsibility for journalists to maintain trust.

Additionally, the workshop featured Bidlisiw Foundation Inc. executive director Pamela Uy, who spoke about the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness for mental well-being in the demanding field of journalism.

“We’re committed to empowering our stakeholders, and that includes the media. Hopefully, this workshop helps journalists become more resilient in the digital age,” said Roby Alampay, FVP and head of the Public Engagement and Corporate Communications Group at PLDT and Smart. (PR)
