FORMER vice mayor Antonio Soriano yesterday frowned over the impeachment complaint filed against President Duterte, saying he doubted if it would prosper even as he questioned the motive behind it.
Soriano, a lawyer by profession, said he did not see any valid ground in the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano.
He pointed out that Duterte has been the President for only less than a year.
In the complaint, the congressman accused Duterte of culpable violation of the Constituton, being involved in bribery, betrayal of public trust and graft and corruption.
Soriano said the timing of the filing of the complaint was suspect given the congressional break.
“Break gani ang pag-file og wala na ang session sa Congress. In other words, ilang gipili karon ang pag-file as an advantage, to have free media mileage. Publicity ang ilang tuyo ani,” Soriano said.
He said he doubted if the complaint would prosper or pass the first step.
“I am certain dili kini molampos because they need one-third of the voting population of the Congress. Even in the committee level, this can be considered premature filing,” Soriano said.
He said even the accusations that Duterte was behind the alleged Davao Death Squad could not be substantiated, citing the apparent contradictions in the statements of self-confessed hitmen retired policeman Arturo Lascañas and Edgar Matobato.
“Dako ang epekto sa imong pagbali-bali sa statement,” said Soriano.
Meanwhile, Msgr. Rey Manuel Monsanto of the local Roman Catholic Archdiocese called on citizens to stay calm and refrain taking part in partisan political maneuverings.
“Wala’y kaayuhan nga mahatag aning impeachment complaint,” he said.
Monsanto said there were also calls to impeach Vice President Leni Robredo.
“We have to stop this vicious political movements,” Monsanto said.
Iglesia Filipina Indepiendente Bishop Felixberto Calang appealed to congressmen to focus on more pressing concerns like providing employment opportunities and on improving the quality of life of citizens.
“Trabaho sa mga kongresista ang pagpanday sa balaodnon ug dili ang pagwaldas sa salapi sa katawhan,” Calang said.
