ILIGAN City — Mayor Frederick W. Siao suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools Monday afternoon as Tropical Depression Verbena brought heavy rains to the region.
The suspension took effect at 1 pm Monday and will extend through Tuesday, pending further assessment.
Siao issued the directive upon the recommendation of the Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (ICDRRMC). The decision followed Weather Advisory No. 18 issued at 11 am by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao PRSD.
Heavy rains have already forced three families to evacuate. Local officials said the families are currently taking temporary shelter at the Abuno Barangay Hall.
The local government and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), alongside barangay officials, are monitoring the evacuees’ safety and providing immediate assistance.
The ICDRRMC assured the public that field teams and response units remain on heightened alert status.
“Let us all remain vigilant. Please avoid flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, and monitor only official updates. Our response [teams] are on standby in case of emergencies,” Siao said.
