ILIGAN City — The local government of Iligan has suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools on June 8 and 9 following a strong earthquake that rocked Mindanao on Monday morning.
Local Executive Mandate and Infrastructure Audits
Mayor Frederick W. Siao signed Executive Order No. 61, Series of 2026, ordering the two-day suspension as a precautionary safety measure for students, faculty, and school personnel.
The offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near Sarangani Province at 7:37 a.m. on Monday, causing distinct tremors across wide sectors of Mindanao, including Iligan City.

According to municipal officials, the temporary school closures will allow engineering teams to thoroughly evaluate the structural safety of school buildings and monitor potential aftershocks before students return to classrooms.
National Directive Action
The local directive follows emergency steps taken in Malacañang. Earlier on Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ordered class suspensions at all levels across all affected areas in Mindanao until further notice.
“The safety of our children comes first,” Marcos said in a statement.
He also directed concerned government agencies to immediately respond to the earthquake and the tsunami warning that followed.
