ILIGAN CITY — The City Government of Iligan is gearing up for a historic Triple Celebration this June, commemorating National Flag Day, the 128th Philippine Independence Day, and the 76th "Adlaw sa Iligan" through a series of cultural, civic, and community-centered activities.

A Theme Rooted in Local Heritage

The festivities are centered on the theme: “Iligan @76: Kabilin, Kagawasan ug Kaugmaon” (Heritage, Freedom, and Future). According to Atty. Laurentino Badelles, the event's overall chairman, the goal is to make this year’s commemoration more engaging for residents by spreading activities across the month, culminating in the main anniversary on June 16.

“We have prepared activities both in the morning and evening. Independence Day falls on a Friday, which is also Night Market Day, giving more people the opportunity to join the celebration,” Badelles said.

Prioritizing Homegrown Talent

In a departure from previous administrations, Jules Verne A. Padilla, chairman of Adlaw sa Iligan 2026, noted that this year’s program prioritizes Iligan-based artists and performers.

“This is the first time under the Siao administration that we are not bringing in national artists. Our goal is to showcase the talents of Iliganons and celebrate the resilience and hope of our people despite the challenges the city has faced,” Padilla said.

For Adlaw sa Iligan, organizers have lined up around 30 activities that place local culture and talent at center stage.

Major activities include a fun run, art exhibits, cultural showcases, Calle Cabili, and recognition programs honoring outstanding Iliganons.

Event Highlights

  • June 12 (Independence Day): A military parade and special performances by uniformed services are scheduled for Friday, coinciding with the city's Night Market Day.
  • June 16 (Adlaw sa Iligan): The civic parade will feature local government offices, national agencies, and community sectors. The day will also feature the launch of “Kaagi,” a commissioned hardbound history book prepared by the MSU-IIT History Department. Officials said the move is intended to give greater prominence to both events and encourage wider public participation.
  • Recognition Programs: The city will debut the Iligan Leadership and Excellence for Development (ILED) awards to honor individuals whose contributions support the city’s priorities in economic growth, environmental stewardship, sports development, and community leadership.

Budget and Community Impact

Hanna Mae Padilla Standfield, vice chair of the Triple Celebration, said the city has partnered with private organizations and event proponents to further expand the festivities. A complete calendar of activities will be released through the city government’s official social media platforms.

The city has allocated approximately P3.4 million for the celebration, including P350,000 for National Flag Day activities, P150,000 for Independence Day programs, and the remainder for Adlaw sa Iligan events.

Activities on June 16 will begin with a Holy Mass at City Hall, followed by a commemorative program featuring the launch of “Kaagi,” a hardbound history book commissioned by the city government and prepared by the MSU-IIT History Department.

The celebration will also include exhibits by the Matriarchs of Iligan, showcasing historical artifacts and memorabilia, as well as recognition programs honoring Iliganons who have brought pride and distinction to the city.

City officials expressed hope that the Triple Celebration will strengthen community pride, honor Iligan’s rich heritage, and inspire residents to help shape the city’s future as it marks its 76th year.
