THE House of Representatives is set to begin its initial deliberations on the proposed Anti-Fake News Bill this November, according to Cagayan de Oro 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan.
Suan made the announcement on Oct. 15 during the turnover of a P146-million flood control project in Barangay Balulang.
Suan, who also chairs the House committee on public information, said he wants to curb the rampant spread of false information on social media.
“Karon Nobyembre 18 sugdan na nato ang initial deliberation sa anti-fake news bill, kay aron kanang mahilig gyud kaayo maghimo og fake news, mapanagot gyud nato na sila,” said Suan.
The measure, he added, was authored by House Majority Floor Leader Sandro Marcos.
Suan said he strongly supports the passage of the bill, having been a victim of fake news himself.
“Kung kumpyansa ka sa imong kaugalingon nga mudaog ka sa eleksyon, nganong mo resort pa man ka sa fake news,” he said, calling such actions “selfish.”
He said the spread of false information misleads the public and promotes irresponsible reporting.
“Gipa bugok nato ang mga tawo pinaagi sa fake news,” he added.
Barangay Balulang Chairman Edwin Micabani expressed support for the proposed legislation, saying that fake news creators are often motivated by online popularity and profit.
“Kung daghan kag views di ba maka kwarta man ka,” said Micabani, explaining why some people resort to spreading disinformation.
Suan emphasized that the bill would strike a balance between curbing malicious content and protecting freedom of expression. He also expressed confidence that the measure would be passed before the upcoming barangay elections.
“Kana rang malicious gyud,” Suan said.
