ILIGAN CITY — Two children are alive today because a 29-year-old man gave his life trying to save them from drowning at Soda Beach in Barangay Sta. Filomena on Friday.
Marjohn Yana Manait, a married father from Barangay Digkilaan, was swept away by strong currents while rescuing the two minors, according to police.
The children survived, but Manait disappeared beneath the waves.
Police said the incident was reported at around 1:40 p.m. Personnel from Iligan City Police Station 3 immediately responded with the Philippine Coast Guard, the Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ICDRRMO), and local volunteers to conduct search and retrieval operations.
After nearly three hours of searching, rescuers recovered Manait's body at around 4:31 p.m. He was declared dead.
The ICDRRMO assisted the rescued children and other survivors, while the Coast Guard led the retrieval efforts.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief and admiration across Iligan. Family, friends, local officials, and residents have hailed Manait as a hero whose selfless act gave two children a second chance at life.
In a Facebook tribute, the Barangay Digkilaan Council described him as a symbol of courage, compassion, and selfless service, saying his sacrifice reflected the highest form of love—giving one's life so others may live.
Authorities reminded beachgoers to stay alert for strong currents, follow safety advisories, and avoid swimming in dangerous conditions, especially during rough weather.
