Families living inside subdivisions in Cagayan de Oro could soon experience quieter and safer streets after the Barangay Affairs Committee approved a proposed ordinance restricting heavy trucks from passing through residential roads.
The measure aims to address long-standing complaints from residents about large trucks using subdivision streets as shortcuts, causing noise, road damage, and safety risks for families and children.
If approved, heavy vehicles will instead be directed to designated main roads and thoroughfares rather than narrow residential streets.
For many residents, the proposal could help reduce daily traffic congestion, lessen vibrations that shake nearby homes, and prevent further damage to subdivision roads that often develop potholes because of oversized vehicles.
Officials said the ordinance is also intended to improve pedestrian safety, especially for children playing outdoors and residents walking inside communities.
Barangay officials clarified that the restriction will mainly target unnecessary heavy truck traffic.
Exceptions may still be allowed for essential deliveries, construction needs, and emergency situations provided operators secure the proper permits.
The proposed measure forms part of 11 ordinances recently endorsed by the committee as part of broader efforts to address community concerns and improve neighborhood safety.
Authorities said truck drivers and operators who violate the ordinance may face penalties once the measure takes effect.
Residents are advised to monitor upcoming announcements regarding approved truck routes, implementation schedules, and procedures for reporting violations.
