IN Cagayan de Oro, gambling remains present in many forms — from traditional card games like tong-its played in communities to the rising trend of online betting apps like BET88, which continues to be advertised across the country despite its legal status.
Tong-its, a common past-time for many locals, is often played during gatherings and social events. While it’s seen as a harmless activity, especially when small bets are involved, the law clearly states that any form of gambling with money that is not authorized by the government is illegal.
Under Presidential Decree 1602, which penalizes illegal gambling, players caught betting on tong-its with real money can face arrest and fines.
Here in the city, several residents have already been apprehended during community patrols for playing tong-its in public places.
The law applies regardless of the amount being wagered. Even private games can be subject to legal action if complaints are raised or if police intervene.
Aside from traditional gambling, online betting platforms are now becoming more common in the city.
BET88 is one of the names that stands out. Despite being banned by authorities for operating without proper licenses, it continues to be heavily promoted online and even in local influencer content. These online platforms offer casino-style games, sports betting, and slot machines accessible from mobile phones.
Because of this, younger audiences and students are also being exposed to gambling content, often without realizing the risks involved.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation has repeatedly warned the public against using unregulated online betting apps, emphasizing that only authorized platforms are allowed to operate in the country.
However, enforcement remains a challenge due to the digital nature of these platforms and the ease with which users can access them.
In Cagayan de Oro, while there is local monitoring for physical gambling activities, online gambling slips through more easily.
Authorities in Cagayan de Oro continue to remind the public that gambling, if not done in licensed establishments or platforms, is illegal.
While games like tong-its may be culturally accepted in many areas, and apps like BET88 appear easy and convenient, both fall under violations of gambling laws when money is involved and no proper permit is issued.
The public is advised to be cautious, especially with online betting platforms, as these can lead to financial loss, addiction, and legal consequences.
