By LITO RULONA Correspondent A LICEO de Cagayan University-based foundation has asked city hall to allow it to operate river taxis along the Cagayan River to provide an alternative mode of public transportation in the city. The Safer River, Life Save Foundation Inc. proposed to collect a P6-fare per person. The foundation is planning on operating river taxis to serve commuters in Macabalan, Puntod, Consolacion, Paseo del Rio and Macanhan, Carmen with Duaw Park as the main docking point, according to Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr., chairman of the city council’s public utilities committee. Initially, the foundation plans to operate two river taxis that could accommodate at least 10 people per trip. Dr. Rosalina Huerbana, the foundation’s executive director, told Lao’s committee city hall could help by providing the docking area at Duaw Park to give eco-tourism along the river a boost. Huerbana said the river taxis would prove to benefit students and professionals, and even be an added feature in Cagayan de Oro tourism. She said the proposed undertaking would not be profit-oriented despite the high costs for the crew and fuel. “We only want everyone to experience travelling along Cagayan de Oro River which is considered to be among our tourist attractions,” Huerbana said.
