Why the harsh reaction?
It’s no secret that the comment likely came from a staunch Duterte Diehard Supporter (DDS), formerly known as the Davao Death Squad. Torre’s sudden rise to power has rattled many in those circles. While his appointment was met with relief and even joy from some sectors, it stirred anxiety in others.
Among those clearly unsettled is Baste Duterte. He was quick to question Torre’s promotion, suggesting it involved bypassing other, perhaps more qualified, officers. But critics were quick to remind Baste of history — how Rodrigo Duterte had once fast-tracked Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, a relatively obscure officer from Davao City, to the top PNP post during his own presidency.
Senator-elect Ping Lacson, himself a former PNP chief, described Torre as “decisive”—a nod of approval from someone who knows the job well.
Torre gained national attention during the government’s pursuit of Apollo Quiboloy, the self-proclaimed “appointed son of God.” He also played a central role in the attempted arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is now in The Hague facing allegations of crimes against humanity. That event triggered wild claims by some DDS loyalists that Duterte had been “kidnapped” by Torre and his team — only to be mocked online as an “oldnapping.”
When Duterte refused to leave after a ten-hour standoff, Torre reportedly responded, “Hihilain ko ’yan!” (“I’ll drag him out!”). The message was clear: this man means business.
And that’s exactly why the DDS is afraid.
But there’s a deeper fear brewing within those loyal to Duterte — an impeachment trial. Rumors are swirling that the proceedings could expose uncomfortable truths, potentially opening a Pandora’s box of past deeds long buried. The strategy now, as many suspect, is to quietly kill the impeachment before it can reach the floor.
The appointment of Torre, a man willing to enforce the law no matter whom it implicates, has put powerful people on edge. As the nation watches the unfolding drama, one thing becomes increasingly clear: some are not just afraid of Torre—they’re afraid of what his leadership might uncover.
