GOLD Star Daily issues this formal correction regarding the article titled “Eight years after the siege, thousands of Marawi residents still wait for compensation,” published on October 24, 2025.
Following a review and communication from the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB), we acknowledge that the article contained several inaccuracies regarding the compensation process and official pronouncements.
We wish to correct the following statements:
Correction on compensation claims
The article erroneously stated details concerning the payment of death claimants and the composition of the bulk of awarded claims.
The Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) spokesperson did not claim that 65 death claimants had been paid. The MCB clarifies that death cases are docketed as Death Claims (DC) or are part of Multiple Claims (MC), and that 64 claims were denied due to insufficient evidence, as required by RA 11696.
The assertion that the bulk of awarded claims consisted of renters and sharers is incorrect. The majority of approved claims fall under Multiple Claims (MC), covering residential structural claims and corresponding personal property claims. Compensation processing for structural damage also includes the business sector and damaged school structures.
Correction on spokesperson’s quote
The article contained a misquotation regarding the preference of residents concerning administrative bodies.
The spokesperson’s explicit statement was: “People do not want to be transferred to the NHA; they want to remain under the MCB.” The quote as it appeared in the original article was inaccurate.
