The Department of Health (DOH) has launched a citywide supplemental immunization campaign against measles and rubella in Cagayan de Oro, targeting children aged six months to four years old.
The drive aims to protect kids from these highly contagious diseases.
"This is not a new vaccine," said Giovanni Ian P. Dael, Health Education and Promotion Officer III, DOH-Northern Mindanao, adding, "It was used about 40 years ago and will serve as a booster for fully vaccinated children."
Jenefir P. Porpio, Health Promotion Officer Designate, cited three reasons for vaccination: "First, it increases the number of vaccinated children. Second, it stops the spread of the disease, and most importantly, it helps prevent the outbreak."
The immunization activity has accommodated over 100 children at Barangay Macasandig.
City Councilor Paolo Nicolo Gaane urged support for the drive, citing a spike in cases in Northern Mindanao – 371 in 2024 and over 400 in 2025, with 74 from unvaccinated children.
"It clearly is showing that low immunization is the primary driver of outbreaks," said Gaane.
Liezl Thomas, a new mom, supports the drive, saying, "Kids have very weak (bodily) resistance... It's very difficult when a child gets sick, and if there's a vaccine to prevent that, why not take it."
The DOH urges parents to visit barangay vaccination centers with children aged six to 59 months. The campaign runs until February 13.
