TALAKAG — Students at Cosina Integrated School are benefiting from improved reading instruction thanks to a digital literacy initiative launched by the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Centerpoint.
Club members visited the remote school Tuesday for their second monitoring assessment of the “Alleviating Learning Poverty Through a Comprehensive Digital Literacy Program.”
Funded by a Rotary global grant, the project aims to strengthen student literacy by integrating digital tools, specifically the “Reading A-Z” platform, into classroom teaching.
The donation package included internet connectivity, LED televisions, printers, laptops and downloadable reading materials.
Project Head Dr. Mercelita Labial said the monitoring results showed the digital tools significantly improved teaching strategies.
“They shared that it made learning activities more meaningful and engaging, provided them access to wider instructional resources, and made the planning and delivery of reading lessons more interactive,” Labial said.
She added that the tools saved teachers preparation time and allowed them to create gamified, visually appealing activities.
The program aligns with the Department of Education’s ARAL Program under Republic Act 12028 and complements the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI). Organizers noted the resources helped teachers implement differentiated instruction and use leveled stories to aid decoding and comprehension.
Mencho Moreno, a Grade 3 class adviser, expressed gratitude for the project's impact.
“We're so blessed nga si Rotarians giabot sa Cosina and ila ming natagaan ani nga privilege, base sa tool nga among ginagamit nag increase gyud ang mga readers namo especially sa among pre-school going to Grade 6,” Moreno said.
